Official Trailer Released for 'New Wave': Billy Idol and Fellow Artists Recall the New Wave Decade Ahead of Nov. 23 MGM+ Premiere

MGM+ unveiled the official trailer and key art on Oct. 20 for New Wave, a four-part documentary series set to premiere Nov. 23, 2026, on MGM+. PEOPLE published an exclusive first look at the trailer the same day.
According to PEOPLE, the series is directed by Douglas Tirola and executive produced by RJ Cutler, with veteran new wave DJ Richard Blade as consulting producer and This Machine Filmworks producing. The official synopsis says the series tells the story of new wave music and the decade from 1977 to 1987 that brought alternative culture into the mainstream, noting that the genre embraced women, the queer community and new technology, reshaped the musical landscape and created a legacy still influencing music today.
Interviewees span the era's defining figures, including Billy Idol, Boy George, Belinda Carlisle, Stewart Copeland of The Police, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, Danny Elfman, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears and Bob Geldof. 'The fashion, the sound, gave you a sense of freedom,' Idol, 70, says in the series.
The trailer also features archival footage of the all-female band the Go-Go's, whose 1981 hit 'We Got the Beat' soundtracks the rest of the preview. The four-part series premieres Nov. 23.
