New York: City Has Removed About 1,200 Sidewalk Sheds This Year and Unveils Brighter New Designs

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

In New York, New York, the city government announced on October 19 that about 1,200 sidewalk sheds have been removed since January, a decrease of more than 15% in ten months. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, Deputy Mayor Leila Bozorg and Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Ahmed Tigani announced the progress and new rules to bring better-designed sheds to streets across the five boroughs: the new designs let more sunlight reach sidewalks and storefronts, improve visibility and the pedestrian experience, and maintain essential safety protections. Two new designs by Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) are now on display outside DOB headquarters in Lower Manhattan; earlier this summer DOB showcased two designs by Arup, one of which TIME magazine named one of its Best Inventions of 2026 last Thursday. Mayor Mamdani said New Yorkers should not have to accept dark, obstructed sidewalks as a fact of life in the world's greatest city, and that the city is taking down sheds that do not need to be there while building a better alternative for those that do.
