Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

New York City is a city in New York County, New York. In Manhattan's Chinatown in New York, New York, the Chinatown Arts Festival presents a cross-genre performance tonight. Hosted by the nonprofit Think!Chinatown, the free outdoor concert Silent Film in Sound takes place on October 20 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Elizabeth Street Garden, with advance registration available. Chinese American composer, saxophonist and singer Stephanie Chou leads her quintet, joined by erhu player Andy Lin. The first half features jazz arrangements of Chinese folk songs and Chou's original compositions; the second half screens the silent film The Curse of Quon Gwon with live accompaniment throughout. Directed by Marion E. Wong in 1916 and running 33 minutes, the partially lost film is considered the earliest known Chinese American feature and one of the first U.S. films directed by a woman; it tells of a Chinese family in America cursed for becoming too westernized. The festival aims to bring Chinatown folk artists and a new generation of Asian American artists together across generations. (GSM, based on Think!Chinatown's official event page)
