Gwyneth Paltrow to Lead Her First TV Series: A24 Thriller 'The Apology' Gets a Two-Season Order at Netflix

Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow will star in "The Apology," a thriller series from A24, in her first-ever lead television role, Deadline reported. Netflix bought the project preemptively in a competitive situation and has given it a straight-to-series order for two seasons.

Paltrow plays Evelyn Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation. When a stranger suddenly appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible, until Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, learn the killer may receive a reduced sentence and decide to take matters into their own hands.

The series is created, written and showrun by Joe Murtagh ("The Woman in the Wall"), with Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg ("Another Round") directing. Joe Hipps of Cut To executive produces alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg and Paltrow. Paltrow's previous television work was limited to a guest arc on "Glee," for which she won an Emmy, and a supporting role in Netflix's "The Politician"; this is her first time leading a series.

The order was spearheaded by Jinny Howe, Netflix's head of scripted series for the U.S. and Canada, and it arrives during a week of major executive upheaval at the streamer.
