Yiyun Li at the Free Library of Philadelphia Tonight: Author Event for New Novel Music Against the Night

Philadelphia is a city in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (a consolidated city-county). In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Chinese American writer Yiyun Li appears tonight (October 20) at 7 p.m. at the Parkway Central Library of the Free Library of Philadelphia (1901 Vine Street) for an author event on her new novel Music Against the Night, published October 13, in conversation with writer Weike Wang; the Philadelphia Asian American Film Foundation (PAAFF) has listed the event on its community calendar for today. Set in Romantic-era Europe, the novel follows Irish teenager John Field, whose musical gift carries him to the Russian court and whose nocturnes are later immortalized by Chopin, and Adelaide of French India, who escapes a prescribed fate by way of a pianoforte and travels through Paris and Moscow. In recent interviews Li has said that after losing both of her sons she found that words often fall short, and chose music, a subject beyond words, for this work. Born in Beijing and now teaching at Princeton University, she is a MacArthur Fellow and PEN/Faulkner Award winner and one of the most prominent Chinese American writers in English today. The Philadelphia stop is part of her national tour; the previous evening she appeared in Washington. (GSM, based on the PAAFF calendar and the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation)
