Second Lady Usha Vance Visits Arkansas: Promotes Children's Reading Alongside Gov. Sanders, Honors Merit-Pay Teachers

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Second Lady Usha Vance spent an "education day" in central Arkansas on October 20 with Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. According to a media advisory issued by the governor's office on October 19, the two visited Glenview Elementary School in North Little Rock in the morning, sat in on classes, held an education roundtable and hosted an assembly for all students; in the afternoon they hosted a reception at the Governor's Mansion in Little Rock honoring Arkansas teachers who received bonuses through the state's Merit Teacher Incentive Fund.

Vance has made children's reading her main public initiative: her "Summer Reading Challenge," which ran from June 1 to September 4, asked students from kindergarten through eighth grade to read 12 books and submit a reading log; those who finished received a certificate, a signed letter from the Second Lady and partner prizes, and top readers could enter a drawing to visit the White House. She has previously promoted the program at schools and military bases in Florida, Colorado, North Carolina and Texas, and at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

Vance, a Yale-educated former litigator, became the first Indian American Second Lady in U.S. history when her husband, JD Vance, became vice president in January 2025.

The advisory did not give specific times for the two events, nor did it say whether this was her first official visit to Arkansas.
