House Committee Strips Healey's Gas Tax Holiday From Budget Bill; Republican Governor Candidate Calls It a "Political Gimmick"

A Massachusetts House committee has removed Governor Maura Healey's proposed temporary suspension of the gas tax from a supplemental budget bill; the House is set to debate and vote on the budget on Wednesday before it goes to the Senate. According to 7NEWS, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue said the gas tax relief idea was originally his, and that if elected governor he would suspend the gas tax whenever prices exceed $4 a gallon, offset the revenue by rooting out waste, fraud and corruption, and ultimately aim to abolish the gas tax entirely.
In a statement, Minogue criticized: "As predicted, this was a political gimmick. Playing this pathetic game with hardworking Massachusetts families makes no sense — Healey's press conferences and staged press releases don't pay the bills." Healey's side had earlier held a press conference to promote the proposed gas tax suspension.
The final version of the supplemental budget will decide whether the temporary tax cut happens, while gas prices and the cost of living have become core issues in this year's governor's race.
