Maine Secretary of State Goes to Westbrook to Mark "Election Heroes Day": A Call to Be Kind to Frontline Election Workers

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows announced in Augusta on October 20 that the day was "Election Heroes Day" — a national, nonpartisan civic holiday honoring the election officials, staff and poll workers who administer elections across the country. Bellows traveled to Westbrook that day, where she joined City Clerk and Registrar of Voters Ellis Ledoux in calling on voters and members of the public doing business with the city to treat frontline staff with kindness.

"We are so fortunate to have dedicated local election officials who work around the clock to ensure that every Maine citizen can vote safely and securely," Bellows said. "But election officials are often attacked — threatened online, yelled at in person — because voters believe things they saw on the internet." She urged people to bring their local election officials baked goods, a card or a kind gesture: "A simple smile and a thank-you can go a long way to ease stress in a busy election season." Ledoux said everyone at the Westbrook city office loves their work: "They are your friends and neighbors, working tirelessly from now through Election Day to make sure everything runs smoothly." With just two weeks until the November 3 election, Maine's election workers at every level are entering their busiest stretch.
