DNA Technology Cracks a 2017 Cold Case: Charleston Police Arrest 69-Year-Old Brisbane

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Charleston police announced on October 20 that they had solved a nearly decade-old cold case, charging 69-year-old Henry James Brisbane with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The victim, Harry Bennett, died in 2017 at his apartment on Maybank Highway on Johns Island; after a neighbor's knock went unanswered, police were called and found the body inside.

According to the Post and Courier, police identified the suspect through DNA evidence, and Brisbane was arrested on October 20. Details of the case remain under investigation.

Charleston police said the breakthrough came from advances in forensic technology, with retesting of old evidence cracking the case. The arrest is another years-old case cleared by Charleston police this year.

Local media note that as DNA databases grow and testing improves, police departments across the country have been solving long-cold homicides in recent years, bringing belated justice to victims' families.
