Texas Comptroller Launches Fraud Reporting Portal: Anonymous Tips Allowed, but Warned "Your Report Is Public"

The Texas Comptroller's office announced on October 19 the launch of a new fraud reporting portal through which the public can submit tips about suspected fraud, corruption, tax evasion and abuse of state tax dollars to its Law Enforcement Operations investigators, with the option to report anonymously. But a hands-on check of the portal on October 20 found that the online reporting form warns in prominent type: "YOUR REPORT IS PUBLIC." Under the form's disclosure statement, members of the public — including media representatives — may request to see report contents and attachments; anonymous reporting can also limit investigators' ability to verify allegations or follow up for more information.
The distinction matters for anyone considering submitting accusations or supporting documents: choosing anonymity does not mean the contents of the report itself stay confidential. The portal covers reporting channels for suspected fraud, corruption, tax fraud, and waste and abuse of state tax funds.
The Comptroller's office encourages tipsters to provide detailed reports and documentation while honestly disclosing the openness risk. The portal's launch comes as early voting opens across Texas (October 19 to 30), with the state's registered voter count now exceeding 19 million.
