New Hospital in Freeman, South Dakota, to Break Ground Today: Governor to Give Keynote as First Phase of Multi-Phase Campus Begins

The city of Freeman, in Hutchinson County, South Dakota, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony today, October 20, for a new hospital and clinic. Freeman Regional Health Services (FRHS), the organizer, said in its announcement that the ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Central time today at the site of the new health care campus, with South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden as the keynote speaker. The ceremony had not yet taken place at the time of publication.
The new campus site lies east of Wynken Drive and west of Highway 81, with Sixth Street to the north and 279th Street (South County Road) to the south, in Freeman, SD 57029. FRHS is an independent community hospital and an affiliate of the Avera system; the groundbreaking falls in the organization's 75th year.
FRHS announced on October 12 that, after years of planning, the first phase of a multi-phase construction project will begin on October 20, with a new nursing home and senior living housing also planned in later phases. FRHS CEO Courtney Unruh said: 'We are honored to have Governor Rhoden join us. His attendance highlights just how critical rural healthcare is for our region and for the state.' She invited the public to attend the ceremony this afternoon.
The governor's office issued its advisory on October 19 confirming that the governor will attend the groundbreaking and deliver the keynote remarks. FRHS said additional details about the ceremony, including other special guests and parking, will be announced.
