Salt Lake City Airport Redevelopment Wraps Up: Final Seven Gates Open October 27, Bringing Total to 94

In Salt Lake City, located in Salt Lake County, Utah, the 12-year redevelopment of Salt Lake City International Airport is entering its final stage. According to the Salt Lake City Department of Airports and an October 19 update from Engineering News-Record (ENR), the $5.1 billion "The New SLC" redevelopment program is wrapping up its Phase 4 Concourse B expansion, with the final seven passenger gates set to be handed over and open on October 27. The department describes The New SLC as the first new hub airport built in the United States in the 21st century.
The seven gates opening on October 27 are on the east side of Concourse B, alongside six new concessions: Einstein Bros. Bagels, Moochie's Cheesesteaks, Monarca, Mr. Charlie's Chicken Fingers, Swig, and the &Go SLC news and convenience store. The new gates will house United Airlines arrivals and departures, plus two common-use gates available to other airlines serving SLC as needed. The completion brings the airport to 94 aircraft gates, 101 concessions and four hardstand positions. The department will hold a final celebration on October 24, and Concourse B-east will feature a new large-scale ceiling installation by artist Gordon Huether titled "Gateway to the World."
The program broke ground in July 2014. Phase 1 opened in September 2020, Phase 2 in October 2023 and Phase 3 in October 2024, and four gates already opened on July 14, 2026. Construction proceeded directly beside active taxiways under an "airport operations come first" approach, with work areas established only after the setbacks required for gate access, aircraft pushback and tug operations were determined. Robert Millar, aviation project director for lead design firm HNTB, said the team coordinated closely with terminal architect HOK and airline stakeholders so existing gates remained operational until replacement gates were available. The Concourse B facilities were built by a joint venture of Austin Commercial and Okland under a $545 million contract.
"We are on our final approach," Bill Wyatt, executive director of the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, said in the department's announcement. "It has been six years since we opened The New SLC and 12 years since we broke ground; however, planning for the new airport has taken decades to plan and we are excited to celebrate this accomplishment in October." The redevelopment was funded through airport funds, passenger and customer facility charges, revenue bonds and federal grants, with no local tax dollars used. When the final seven gates open on October 27, the four-phase program will be formally complete.
