New York Forms Exploratory Committee to Evaluate 2042 Winter Games Bid, Adds $2.5M for 'Miracle on Ice' Monument

New York Governor Kathy Hochul convened the first meeting of the Lake Placid–New York City Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee in New York City on October 19, announcing a panel of about 90 members to evaluate a possible New York bid for the 2042 Winter Games.
The committee, drawn from sports, business, labor and community organizations, will study venues, transportation, finances and community impact under a two-host model pairing Lake Placid with New York City. Lake Placid hosted the Winter Games in 1932 and 1980, and its Olympic venues are operated by the state-run Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).
Hochul also announced $2.5 million in state funding for the "Monument to a Miracle" project, honoring the 1980 U.S. Olympic men's hockey team's victory over the Soviet Union in Lake Placid and five-time gold medalist Eric Heiden. Hochul said New York is "an Olympic State" with the venues and experience to host the Winter Games again, and that the committee will assess whether to move forward with a formal bid.
