Three UCLA Professors Elected to the National Academy of Medicine

The U.S. National Academy of Medicine on October 19 announced 100 newly elected members for its class of 2026, including three UCLA professors: health economist Susan Ettner, physician-scientist Donald Kohn and cancer researcher Dennis Slamon.
Ettner, a professor of health policy and management at UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health, studies the relationship between income and health and serves as special assistant to the dean. Kohn, a distinguished professor of pediatrics and of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics at the David Geffen School of Medicine, has pioneered gene therapies for children with life-threatening diseases, leading blood stem cell gene therapy trials. Slamon, a distinguished professor of medicine in hematology and oncology at the medical school, conducted research that led to the development of the breast cancer drugs trastuzumab (Herceptin) and palbociclib (Ibrance).
National Academy of Medicine President Monica M. Bertagnolli said the new members are trailblazers in their fields and that their insights will be essential to addressing today's pressing health challenges. Election to the academy is considered one of the highest honors in health and medicine in the United States.
