Austria's Equal Treatment Report: 9,268 Enquiries in Two Years, With Discrimination Cases Up 33 Percent to 1,975 and About 73 Percent Workplace-Related

Vienna, Austria — Austria's parliamentary Equal Treatment Committee has debated the latest equal treatment report. The Equal Treatment Ombud (GAW) received 9,268 enquiries over the two years 2024-2025, the report shows.
Enquiries classified as discrimination rose to 1,975, an increase of 33 percent over the two years. Of these, 46 percent concerned sex and 33 percent ethnic origin, and about 73 percent were related to the workplace, including hiring, pay and harassment issues.
Lawmakers discussed how to strengthen anti-discrimination bodies, implement EU standards across companies and the public sector, and raise awareness of where to seek help. The ombuds office noted that rising enquiry numbers may reflect both the scale of discrimination problems and a greater willingness among affected people to come forward.
