Former NFL defensive end Allen Bailey has died at the age of 37. His brother, Alford Bailey Jr., told TMZ that Bailey's wife found him dead on October 20 at their Florida home and that the family believes he died of natural causes. No official cause of death had been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid opened his October 21 news conference by offering condolences to Bailey's family, calling him one of his favorite players and saying he was gone far too young. The Chiefs said in a social media post that Bailey was an excellent teammate, a generous man and a kind soul, and that the team was deeply saddened by his passing. The Atlanta Falcons also posted condolences to his family and friends.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recalled that Bailey was the first person he saw when he walked into the locker room after being drafted in 2017, and that seeing the 6-foot-3, 288-pound Bailey made him realize he was no longer in college. Mahomes called Bailey a glue guy who made everything go and said teammates would do whatever they could to support his family.

Bailey was born on March 25, 1989, on Sapelo Island, Georgia, played college football at the University of Miami, and was selected by Kansas City in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He spent eight seasons with the Chiefs (2011-18) and two with the Atlanta Falcons (2019-20) before being released in 2021. In 133 regular-season games (70 starts) he recorded 248 tackles, 22 sacks, 40 tackles for loss, 40 quarterback hits, four forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries, one returned for a touchdown, plus 10 tackles and two sacks in six playoff games.
