Follow-Up: Some 100,000 California State Workers Strike for One Day on October 21; Essential Staff Stay On, DMV and EDD Service May Be Delayed

Some 100,000 members of SEIU Local 1000 went ahead with a planned one-day strike on Wednesday, October 21, with picket lines from Crescent City to San Diego starting at 7 a.m. The union and the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) have been in mediation since October 15, but no tentative agreement had been reached as of the evening of October 20; the next mediation session is set for October 30. The Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) declined to seek a court injunction after the union agreed in writing to keep essential workers on duty: roughly 4,400 to 5,000 essential employees, mostly prison health-care staff, are exempt from the strike. The union is seeking raises of 7, 7 and 6 percent over three years, cheaper health care and more telework; the contract expired June 30, and the strike was authorized by 96 percent of voting members. DMV and EDD offices remain open on the strike day but may see delays or close early. The state says striking workers will not be paid for the day and absences will be coded as absent without leave (AWOL).
