Storm Adam Brings Deadly Floods to Southern France: One Man Swept Away, Red Alert in Haute-Corse

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · World News · GSM News

PARIS — Storm Adam brought torrential rain and flash floods to southern France on October 20. A shopping area in Saint-Mitre-les-Remparts, near Marseille, was flooded, and the town's mayor, Vincent Goyet, confirmed that a man was swept into the Étang de Berre lagoon in the early hours of the morning and his body was found later in the day, according to AFP and other reports.

Goyet said a large number of houses had been flooded, some suffering major damage from landslides, with walls collapsed, trees fallen and departmental roads cut off, and multiple evacuations carried out. "We've never seen anything like this," he said. An irrigation canal in the town was threatening to burst in places, and workers were reinforcing it to protect houses below.

Météo France placed Haute-Corse, on the eastern coast of Corsica, under a red alert for rain and flooding, warning that exceptionally intense and dangerous phenomena were expected and that absolute vigilance was required.

The same storm had earlier hit Spain, where five people were killed, and residents in Spain's Valencia region were still cleaning up on October 20.
