Hong Kong: HKEX Launches Green Equity Designation Programme, Applications Open to Listed Companies

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) announced on October 20 the launch of HKEX Green Equity, a new voluntary designation programme designed to help investors more readily identify Hong Kong-listed companies with significant green business activities. HKEX said the programme is aligned with similar globally recognised frameworks and will form a key part of its low-carbon transition ecosystem. Eligible companies are welcome to apply from October 20.
Under the programme, eligible companies will be assessed by independent Recognised Reviewers based on the HKEX Green Equity Framework, which evaluates the extent to which a company's activities contribute to the green economy. Companies that meet the framework requirements will be awarded the HKEX Green Equity designation and may use the designation mark, subject to ongoing compliance and annual reassessments. A list of approved Recognised Reviewers has been published on the dedicated HKEX Green Equity webpage.
Paul Chow, HKEX Group General Counsel and Group Chief Sustainability Officer, said in the statement that investor demand for sustainable investment opportunities continues to grow, creating a greater need for credible and transparent ways to identify companies contributing to the green economy. HKEX said the programme complements its broader sustainability offerings, from climate disclosures to products available through Core Climate, including carbon credits and Green Electricity Certificates, and helps promote adoption of the Hong Kong Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance in capital markets.
