Myanmar Authorities Release Rare Images of Aung San Suu Kyi: Officials Say Books and Letters From Britain's King Charles Delivered

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · World · GSM News

Myanmar's military-backed government on October 19 released rare photographs of the detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi. According to a social media post by Myanmar's presidential spokesperson, government officials delivered to her two books, a sealed envelope and a diplomatic communication sent by Britain's King Charles. The two books were "The Land Gardeners: Soil to Table" and "Soil: The World at Our Feet." The photographs show Suu Kyi seated at a table with two officials, with items placed between them.

Suu Kyi, 81, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. She has been detained since February 2021, when the military ousted her elected government and arrested civilian leaders in early-morning raids. Her whereabouts and health have since been difficult to determine and photographs of her have been rare; no foreign leader or envoy has publicly met with her despite requests. In April this year, following an election held under military rule that installed coup leader Min Aung Hlaing as president, she was moved to house arrest at a designated residence. In August, she met a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

According to Reuters, Suu Kyi is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence for offences ranging from incitement and corruption to election fraud and violating a state secrets law, all of which she denies. Her original 33-year sentence was later reduced. (Reporting by Reuters)
