Taiwan: Four Workers Killed at TSMC Kaohsiung Fab 22 Site, Similar Steel Work Halted Across Taiwan

TSMC said on October 21 that four construction workers had been killed at the site of a new factory in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, and that some building work had been halted. The accident occurred on the afternoon of October 20 at the P4 construction site of TSMC's Fab 22 in Nanzi District, Kaohsiung. According to Taiwanese media reports, four subcontractor workers were lifting and installing a steel structure on the third floor when the structure fell and the workers fell with it. Three died on October 20 and the fourth died of his injuries on the morning of October 21; the workers were reported to be between 33 and 37 years old. Taiwanese media reported that investigators were examining whether bolts at the structure's connections had broken, and that the exact cause would be determined only after further examination.
In an emailed statement, TSMC said it and its construction contractor had immediately suspended related construction work at the site, and had also suspended similar steel structure work at all of its construction sites across Taiwan pending the investigation. The company said its on-site safety team was cooperating with the relevant authorities and the contractor to investigate the incident and ensure appropriate remedial steps are taken. The Southern Taiwan Science Park Bureau sent inspectors to the site, ordered the site preserved and halted work. Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai expressed deep regret over the accident and said the city government would help strengthen industrial safety inspections and construction procedures.
TSMC is the world's largest contract chip maker and a major supplier of the advanced chips powering the trend toward super intelligence. The Fab 22 plant is part of its advanced-process production footprint. (Reporting by Reuters, CNA's Focus Taiwan and Taiwanese media)
