Vietnam and Denmark Establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: Denmark Becomes the Second EU Member, After France, at Vietnam's Highest Partnership Level

To Lam, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President of Vietnam, held talks with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Copenhagen on October 20, and the two countries adopted a joint statement upgrading their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. To Lam's state visit to Denmark ran from October 19 to 21 and coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1971-2026).
Denmark thereby becomes the second European Union member state, after France, to establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam. The relationship had already passed two earlier milestones: a Comprehensive Partnership in 2013 and a Green Strategic Partnership in 2023. Frederiksen described Vietnam as one of Denmark's key partners in Southeast Asia and expressed her hope of strengthening cooperation in the new phase.
The two leaders identified economic, trade and investment cooperation as an important pillar of the new partnership, agreeing to implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement effectively, promote market opening and help businesses from both countries join global value and supply chains more deeply. Frederiksen voiced support for Danish businesses to increase their presence and long-term investment in Vietnam, particularly in high-tech, environmentally friendly and high-value-added projects; Danish companies including LEGO, Maersk, Pandora, Carlsberg and Vestas already operate in Vietnam. The two sides also agreed to advance the Green Strategic Partnership on energy transition, climate response and sustainable development, including renewable energy and offshore wind, and to support Vietnam's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, alongside wider cooperation in ports, logistics, green maritime transport, science and technology, healthcare and education.
Frederiksen particularly appreciated the more than 18,000 Vietnamese people living in Denmark, noting that they have integrated well into the host society and contributed positively to local socio-economic development. Both leaders agreed to direct their ministries and agencies to turn the commitments into concrete projects, and To Lam invited Frederiksen to visit Vietnam soon, an invitation she accepted.
