Connecticut Approves $6.9 Million to Fix Chronic Flooding in New Britain, Plus $250,000 Homeowner Program

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and New Britain officials announced on October 21 that the State Bond Commission has approved $6.9 million in grants to address chronic flooding around the city's Allen Street neighborhood: building a new stormwater system, replacing sewer and water lines, and repairing roads. Officials said the neighborhood floods during heavy rainstorms because the aging drainage system cannot handle large volumes of water.
Officials also launched the New Britain Homeowners Flood Compensation Program, backed by $250,000 in state funding, to help the hardest-hit homeowners pay for repairs; the program will be run by the state comptroller's office, with former state Rep. Peter Tercyak volunteering as administrator. Mayor Bobby Sanchez said residents had been told for years to wait while their basements flooded and streets washed out.
