Rockford Named an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

The National Park Service announced on Oct. 21 that the city of Rockford and Winnebago County, Illinois, have been designated the state's American World War II Heritage City, honoring the area's contributions to the war effort.

During World War II, Camp Grant near Rockford was one of the nation's principal induction and medical training centers: about 680,000 soldiers trained there, including roughly 100,000 medics. Machesney Airport trained more than 1,100 pilots, and about 16,000 Winnebago County residents served in the military. Rockford factories produced parts for the war, including propeller governors and other critical components made by the Woodward Governor Company for military aircraft.

Rockford is also a landmark city for women's baseball: the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League were founded there in 1943. The American World War II Heritage City designation, administered by the National Park Service, preserves and shares the history of home-front contributions across the country.
