Louisiana Coastal Authority Approves Two Major Restoration Plans Totaling About $265.7 Million

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) has approved final plans for two major coastal restoration projects totaling about $265.7 million. Both plans went through public comment in May and June 2026.

The East Orleans Landbridge project, at about $109.4 million, will restore 1,320 acres of wetlands and reinforce 14,867 feet of shoreline east of New Orleans. The Raccoon Island project, at about $156.3 million, will restore 410 acres of barrier island wetlands and build four bay-side breakwaters and nine living shoreline features.

CPRA Chairman Gordon "Gordy" Dove said the two projects are part of the state's coastal master plan to slow land loss and strengthen coastal communities against storm surge. Louisiana's barrier islands and wetlands are considered the first line of defense for New Orleans and coastal towns.
