Montana Wildlife Commission Approves 99-Year Hanna Ranch Conservation Easement, a First for the State

Montana's Fish and Wildlife Commission has approved a 99-year conservation easement for the Hanna Ranch, the first arrangement of its kind in the state. The ranch, south of Lewistown, covers more than 3,600 acres.
The landowner had hoped for a permanent easement and accepted the 99-year term instead; under the agreement, public access to the ranch will be permanently retained. The commission also took up the 2027–28 fishing regulations and usage fees, and discussed a plan to reintroduce the northern leopard frog.
The commission also set Oct. 31 as the effective date for a motorboat ban on Mitchell Slough, and denied a petition seeking a boating ban on Swan Lake. (GSM, based on reporting by Montana Public Radio)
