Nevada Sets Ground Rules for Federal Election Monitors: Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar Says Local Officers Will Be Trained to Remove Violators

Reuters reported on Oct. 21 that as the U.S. Department of Justice prepares to send roughly 1,000 election monitors to all 50 states for the November midterms, Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar said the state will train local law enforcement to remove DOJ monitors who violate state rules from polling places.
Aguilar said Nevada welcomes lawful election observation, but federal monitors must follow the state's polling-place rules, and local officers will have authority to ask violators to leave. States differ on the powers of observers, and the Justice Department's large-scale deployment has sparked authority disputes in several states.
The Justice Department says the monitors' mission is to ensure elections are conducted lawfully. The Nov. 3 midterms will decide control of Congress. (GSM, based on reporting by Reuters)
