134 Killed in Domestic Violence Incidents in Ohio in a Year: Nearly Half Were Trying to Leave

The Ohio Domestic Violence Network's annual report shows 134 people were killed in domestic violence incidents in the state over the past year, across 101 cases — down 15 percent from 157 the year before, but still the second-highest total in the network's 11 years of tracking.
The details are stark: about three-quarters of the victims were shot; 49 percent were killed while trying to leave their abuser; victims ranged in age from 7 months to 88 years; 53 children witnessed a killing, 5 children were killed by a parent or stepparent, and 3 teenagers were killed by dating partners; 24 cases ended in murder-suicide.
Network spokesperson Maria York said the data show domestic violence homicides often occur as victims try to leave a relationship. The report cites individual cases including that of Ryan Eagon of Tiffin, and is compiled from shelter programs and law enforcement records statewide.
