100-Plus Washington Students Build Anti-Fraud Tools in 24-Hour HuskyHack: Winning App Flags Scam Calls in Real Time

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

The second annual HuskyHack took place over the weekend at the University of Washington Tacoma. Co-hosted by Sound Credit Union and the university's Milgard Center for Business Analytics, the event drew more than 100 students from colleges across the state to build fintech solutions in 24 hours.

This year's challenge targeted financial fraud: design a tool that helps the credit union recognize when a member is being manipulated, compromised or deceived, and intervene before money is lost. Three top pitches in the first phase each won $1,000; the grand prize was $15,000 plus a six-month membership at CoMotion Labs in Seattle.

The winning entry was Scout, built by finance students Colin Sica and Noah Soepardi: a live scam-detection service that monitors phone conversations for common fraud tactics. When a caller requests money, passwords, account information, verification codes or remote access, Scout places the caller on hold and privately alerts the member, who can continue the call, end it, or connect safely with the credit union.
