Colorado's 8th District Becomes a Spending War: Super PACs Have Poured In $18.9 Million, Among the Nation's Highest

Colorado's 8th Congressional District, covering Denver's northern suburbs and southern Weld County, is becoming one of the most expensive House races in the nation. According to Federal Election Commission filings, super PACs had spent $18.9 million in independent expenditures by Oct. 20 on the contest between incumbent Republican Rep. Gabe Evans and Democratic challenger Manny Rutinel, a sitting state representative — twice the combined $9.4 million of outside spending in Colorado's other three competitive House districts. Only North Carolina's 1st District and Florida's 25th District House races have drawn more total spending this cycle.
The two candidates debated in Berthoud on Oct. 7. The 8th District is Colorado's newest and most diverse congressional district, drawn by an independent commission in 2021, and has attracted tens of millions of dollars in outside money for a third straight cycle as a proxy battlefield for control of the House. Both camps are backed by their parties' national super PACs, with advertising across television, digital and mail. Election Day is Nov. 3, and the result is seen as a bellwether in the fight for the House majority.
