Indiana Approves $102.9 Million Highway Reimbursement to Offset Gas Tax Holiday Losses

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Indiana's State Budget Committee on Oct. 21 approved a new round of highway funding reimbursements totaling more than $102.9 million, to offset road revenue lost during the Aug. 1-31 gas tax holiday. More than $19.1 million of the amount will go directly to cities, towns and counties. It is the fourth reimbursement since Gov. Mike Braun implemented the gas tax holiday. The committee also approved the annual transfer of $70 million in gasoline excise tax revenue to the state highway construction and improvement fund.

Officials said the money is based on gas tax revenue collected in July and normally appears as an adjustment in August local road distributions; this year the holiday delayed the July revenue, so the adjustment arrived later than usual. They said the reimbursements keep local road budgets whole despite the holiday, though the cost is effectively shifted to state reserve funds.
