Boston Launches Coastmix, an Interactive Coastal Flooding Tool: Residents Can Design Their Own Shoreline Defenses

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

The City of Boston officially launched Coastmix on Oct. 21, an interactive tool that lets residents design their own coastal flood defenses. Developed by the city's Office of Climate Resilience and the Office of Emerging Technology, the online tool borrows from Streetmix, popular in urban design circles: users drag and drop seawalls, wetlands, paths and other modules to explore shoreline protection combinations, and can share their designs in a community gallery. The tool is live at coastmix.org, with tutorials at boston.gov/coastmix. The city will also host an online workshop at noon on Nov. 6 to demonstrate the tool and answer questions.

Boston is advancing resilience planning along its 47 miles of coastline, and officials hope the game-like format helps residents without engineering backgrounds understand what can actually be built along the shore, while gathering community input. The tool is open not only to Boston residents but also to researchers, students and other coastal cities worldwide.
