Suspicious Mail Reaches Multiple Maryland Congressional Offices: Staff Evacuated, No Injuries, as FBI Probes 100+ Letters in 19 States

Offices of several Maryland members of Congress were evacuated last Friday after receiving suspicious mail, as the FBI investigates at least 100 similar mailings across 19 states. The district offices of Democratic Reps. Sarah Elfreth and Johnny Olszewski were evacuated after receiving letters containing an unknown substance; both offices said no one was injured or became ill. Olszewski spokesperson Jaime Lennon said staff isolated the package and notified law enforcement.
Letters were also sent to the offices of Reps. Kweisi Mfume, Steny Hoyer and Jamie Raskin; envelopes addressed to Sens. Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks were intercepted, as was one sent to the Maryland State Board of Elections, State Administrator Jared DeMarinis confirmed. Mfume has written to the Postal Service and the Postal Inspection Service demanding answers, saying, 'In this political climate, I will not be intimidated or silenced.' The FBI and the Inspection Service said some letters contained an unknown substance and they are working to identify the sender. DeMarinis called the threats 'an attack on the election process' and urged residents to keep voting; Maryland early voting begins Thursday, Oct. 22, less than two weeks before the Nov. 3 election.
