Montana Land Board Approves 86-Acre Easement: First Step Toward Gallatin Valley's First Public Shooting Range

Montana's Land Board approved on Oct. 19 a proposal by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) to acquire an 86-acre easement from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), a first step toward building a public shooting range south of Logan in Gallatin County. FWP said the project will fill a gap in public land for recreational shooting in the Gallatin Valley. Acquisition and construction funding comes from federal Pittman-Robertson grants matched with state hunting license revenue.
'Hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts need a safe place to practice, and this project both meets the needs of the Gallatin Valley and responds to the safety concerns of other users and neighboring landowners,' said FWP Director Christy Clark. The planned Logan public shooting range will include a rifle range with targets out to 400 yards, separate handgun and short-range lanes, and a shotgun area, with disciplines separated for safety so rounds stay within the range and every shooter fires in a safe direction. The project's goals include reducing recreational shooting safety hazards, protecting neighboring landowners, cutting down shooting litter, and providing a fixed facility for safe, environmentally responsible recreational shooting.
