Four States Vote on Abortion on Nov. 3: Virginia and Two Others Decide Whether to Protect Abortion Rights

Voters in four states will weigh in on abortion in the Nov. 3 midterm election. In Virginia, Idaho and Nevada, voters will decide whether to adopt ballot measures protecting abortion rights, while Missouri voters will decide whether to repeal their state's reproductive freedom constitutional amendment and replace it with gestational limits. It is the fourth round of state-level abortion votes since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
Notably, the issue is generating less intensity than in past cycles: a Pew Research Center poll in early October found the share of Democrats calling abortion 'very important' has fallen from 75 percent in 2022 to 49 percent, while the Republican share rose slightly from 39 percent to 43 percent. National anti-abortion groups are directing more resources this cycle toward preserving Republican majorities in Congress rather than all-out fights against state abortion-rights measures.
