Vermont Celebrates Its First Statewide Libraries Day: Act 127 Establishes the Annual Observance

Vermont celebrated its first statewide Libraries Day on Oct. 19. Under Act 127, passed this year, the third Monday in October is now Vermont Libraries Day, recognizing the contributions of libraries and library workers across the state. Catherine Delneo, Vermont's state librarian and commissioner of libraries, said: 'Every Vermonter has a library, and every library has something to offer the community it serves.'
State library officials noted that today's libraries offer far more than books: digital resources, community gathering spaces, internet access and educational programming, plus lending collections that include gardening tools, sports equipment, home-repair and cooking items, science and nature education kits, and even museum and state park passes for families. Libraries also support learning, social connection, disaster preparedness and community building, with public libraries providing free access to books in physical, digital and accessible formats, databases, research assistance and meeting spaces.
