Michigan Set to Start Freshman Tommy Carr at Quarterback Against Indiana, With Bryce Underwood Moved to Backup

In Michigan, multiple media outlets reported on October 21 that the University of Michigan Wolverines plan to start freshman quarterback Tommy Carr this week against No. 6 Indiana, in what would be his first collegiate start, with sophomore Bryce Underwood, the previous starter, moving to a backup role. In last week's game against Penn State, Michigan trailed 3-0 at halftime before Carr came off the bench in the second half, completing 5 of 7 passes for 47 yards and adding 36 yards on four carries, including a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, as the Wolverines rallied to win 21-18. Underwood, who has a reported $12 million name, image and likeness package with Michigan, has completed 58.1 percent of his passes this season for 924 yards and five touchdowns with six interceptions. Carr, from Saline, Michigan, is the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr and will become the fifth true freshman to start at quarterback for the Wolverines. Head coach Kyle Whittingham did not announce a starter at his Monday press conference, saying the team saw good things from Carr in the second half and has a good plan in place but would not tip its hand to the opponent. Michigan is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
