Ohio Governor DeWine: State to Press Harder on Prediction Market Operators

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine said on October 21 that the state is preparing to ramp up enforcement against prediction market companies offering sports-related contracts, saying the companies should not be able to offer services reserved for licensed sportsbooks. DeWine said the operators do not meet the same standards as licensed sportsbooks, including by permitting wagers on prohibited bet types such as specific plays in a game, and by advertising their services during sporting events, which licensed operators are not allowed to do. The Ohio Casino Control Commission has already issued several cease-and-desist letters against platforms including Robinhood, Kalshi and Polymarket, and enforcement is now set to increase in intensity, with possible court cases and fines being pursued. Regulators said the exact actions to be taken will be announced as they are determined.
