Rhode Island Democrats Pick New Chair: State Rep. Jenni Furtado Succeeds Resigned Beretta-Perik

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

Rhode Island House Speaker Christopher Blazejewski announced on October 21 that state Representative Jenni Furtado has been picked as the next chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, succeeding Elizabeth Beretta-Perik, who stepped down the previous day following the indictment of her husband on fraud and racketeering charges.

Furtado, 33, is a lawyer and a former East Providence School Committee member who represents House District 64 in East Providence. She is Rhode Island's first Peruvian-American elected official. Her parents came to the United States fleeing violence in Peru and settled in Mamaroneck, New York; she moved to Rhode Island to attend Roger Williams University School of Law. Her husband, Marc Furtado, is a veteran of East Providence Democratic Party politics. Furtado is unopposed in the November election.

In a statement, Furtado said these are difficult political times and people want to know that Democrats are listening and working on the things that affect their everyday lives, adding that she looks forward to working with Democrats in every city and town across the state to do just that.
