Spain's Cabinet Approves a €45 Million University Housing Plan and a New University Students' Statute, Funding Seven Projects With About 2,000 Places

Madrid, Spain — Spain's Council of Ministers on Tuesday, October 20, approved two measures for university students: €45 million to support seven university residence projects creating roughly 2,000 new places, and a new University Students' Statute replacing the framework in place since 2010.
The funded projects are at the Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Albacete), Pablo de Olavide University in Seville, the universities of Burgos, Jaén and Jaume I (Castelló), and a project led by Lleida city council. Beyond expanding residences, the government is also pursuing student-housing supply through regional funds and cooperation with cities and the construction sector.
Under the new statute, scholarships will progressively incorporate the cost of accommodation; the current residence grant is €2,700 per student, and the scholarship and study-aid budget for 2026-27 is €2.559 billion. Students on mobility stays in Spain or abroad are to receive their scholarships in advance. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has made expanding affordable access to higher education and housing for young people a stated government priority.
