FEMA Opens Applications for 2027 Youth Preparedness Council: Students in Grades 8-11 May Apply Through March 2, 2027

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced on October 19 that applications are open for the 2027 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). Students in grades 8 through 11 may apply online through March 2, 2027.
Formed in 2012, the council brings together teen leaders from across the country who are interested in preparedness. Members work on preparedness projects, bring a youth perspective to FEMA leadership, and share preparedness practices with peers nationwide. Each summer, members travel to Washington, D.C., for the Youth Preparedness Council Summit, where they meet FEMA officials and emergency management professionals; the 2027 summit is scheduled for July 2027 in Washington, with travel expenses covered by FEMA.
According to FEMA's application page, applicants must be in grades 8 through 11 at the time of application and must submit a letter of recommendation from an adult who is not a parent or guardian. The application covers preparedness projects the student has completed or hopes to carry out, along with extracurricular activities and volunteer experience. Applications are submitted online through the Youth Preparedness Council page on FEMA's website.
FEMA says the council gives young people a direct role in community preparedness: past members have led emergency-preparedness projects at their schools and in their communities and have advised the agency on preparedness issues affecting youth.
