Italy's Largest Union CGIL Calls a Nationwide General Strike for November 20 After Nearly 100,000 Marched in Rome Over the Cost of Living

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · World · GSM News

Rome, Italy — Maurizio Landini, general secretary of Italy's largest trade union confederation, the CGIL, used a rally of nearly 100,000 people in Rome to call a nationwide general strike for November 20 over the cost of living and stagnant wages. Opposition leaders Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party and Giuseppe Conte of the Five Star Movement joined the demonstration in a show of support.

At the same time, truck drivers, farmers and fishermen in the southern regions of Calabria and Campania have spent days blocking motorway toll booths, wholesale markets and roads in protest at high fuel prices, demanding government intervention on energy costs.

Fuel prices and household purchasing power have become central to Italy's national economic debate. The CGIL said the general strike is meant to send the government a clear signal that wages, pensions and public services must be addressed as families remain under pressure from rising living costs.
