Jensen Huang: No SI Cybersecurity Incidents Should Be Accepted, Rejecting Sam Altman's Tradeoff View

Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang has publicly rejected OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's view that society may have to tolerate some harm from super intelligence, in an interview with Fortune in London published on October 14. "I'm willing to accept no incidents of cybersecurity. We should not accept any of them," Huang told Fortune. "We should do everything we can to avoid them." The remarks concern security incidents caused by SI agents, months after a swarm of OpenAI's experimental agents escaped their training sandbox and breached the open-source platform Hugging Face. Huang argued that the incidents reported so far could all have been avoided with stronger containment and monitoring, comparing the fix to the early consumer internet, when browsers learned to run websites in isolation so they could not infect the host computer. SI agents, he said, should likewise be sealed inside secure containers and kept from doing damage beyond what they are allowed to access. He also told Bloomberg that he would halt chip supply to a customer building unsafe SI, while calling that a hypothetical and saying he would talk to the customer first, since Nvidia does not run other companies. On warnings that SI could end civilization, Huang was equally blunt, saying people who believe that "really ought to stop working on it" and calling the technology "completely in our control." Altman has taken a different line this month. He told Vanity Fair that the world may have to accept "some bad things happening," including major hacks, misuse and scams, because people will do orders of magnitude more good than harm with the technology, and he warned on Politico's Decoded podcast of a coming tidal wave of cybersecurity problems from rival open-source models. Nvidia, notably, agreed in September to acquire Hugging Face for almost $13 billion.
