Michigan Grants $2.2 Million Toward $17 Million Lapeer Opera House Redevelopment

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced on October 21 that its Revitalization and Placemaking Program will support the rehabilitation of the historic Lapeer Opera House in downtown Lapeer, a mostly vacant and functionally obsolete building. The project represents a total investment of about $17 million, supported by a state grant of $2.2 million.
According to the MEDC, the project will restore the historic building and add 25 housing units and commercial space, creating an expected 24 full-time jobs, with a portion of the housing reserved for low- and moderate-income residents. The applicant is the City of Lapeer Downtown Development Authority. The opera house is a historic landmark in Lapeer, the seat of Lapeer County, Michigan; the city has previously pursued grants to convert the building's upper floors to apartments.
