[Video] Golden Globes Refuse 'Michael' in Musical/Comedy, Move Jackson Biopic to Drama Against 'Hamnet'

The Golden Globes organization has ruled that the Michael Jackson biopic 'Michael' may not compete for best musical or comedy picture at the 83rd Golden Globes and must instead enter the drama categories. The ruling was first reported by Gold Derby on October 16 and later confirmed by Variety and other outlets.
The decision places 'Michael' in the drama field against 'Hamnet,' 'Sinners,' 'No Other Choice,' 'Sentimental Value' and 'It Was Just an Accident.' Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael Jackson, will likewise compete as best actor in a drama.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua from a script by John Logan and produced by Graham King with the Jackson estate, 'Michael' stars the singer's nephew Jaafar Jackson, with Colman Domingo as his father, Joe Jackson. Released on April 24, the film has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing music biopic in history and Lionsgate's biggest film ever.
Nominations for the 83rd Golden Globes will be announced on December 8, and the ceremony is set for January 11, 2027, hosted by Nikki Glaser, airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
