Man Pleads Guilty to Capital Murder in Shooting Death of Wyandotte County Deputy Elijah Ming

A man accused of fatally shooting Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office Deputy Elijah Ming in Kansas City, Kansas, in July 2025 has pleaded guilty to capital murder, KMBC reported. Sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026, and under Kansas law the mandatory sentence for the offense is life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Deputy Elijah Ming, 34, was a nine-year veteran of the sheriff's office. According to the Associated Press, on a Saturday afternoon in July 2025, at about 3:45 p.m., a woman living at a home had asked law enforcement to stand by while she moved out, saying the man inside, Shawn Harris, had threatened friends who were helping her move. As Ming and a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer approached the home, Harris opened fire. Ming was hit multiple times and died hours later at a hospital. Harris was also shot during the exchange, barricaded himself inside, and surrendered after about an hour of negotiations.
Harris, 38, who had previously served time for aggravated robbery and other crimes, was charged by District Attorney Mark Dupree Sr. with capital murder and with violating a Kansas law barring people with felony records from possessing weapons. He was initially jailed in neighboring Johnson County on $2 million bond, and the state's capital defense unit was appointed to represent him.
