Japanese Envoy Yohei Sasakawa Meets Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyitaw to Discuss Peace-Process Support

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · World · GSM News

Naypyitaw, Myanmar — Yohei Sasakawa, Japan's special envoy for national reconciliation in Myanmar and honorary chairman of the Nippon Foundation, met Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Naypyitaw on Tuesday, October 20, the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Wednesday.

The two discussed Sasakawa's offer to assist with "Myanmar's internal peace process" and Nippon Foundation support for human resources development. Sasakawa has long served as Tokyo's envoy on Myanmar and in 2022 brokered a truce between the military and the Arakan Army, which later collapsed.

The meeting comes as several governments re-engage Myanmar: the United States held talks with Myanmar officials in Tokyo this month, Japan's acting envoy met Myanmar's foreign minister in October, and ruling-party lawmaker Hiromichi Watanabe visited Naypyitaw in September. Myanmar's civil war since the 2021 change of power has reportedly killed more than 100,000 people and displaced over 3.5 million.
