152,000 Dutch Employees Worked Past State Pension Age in the Second Quarter, 1.7 Percent of All Employees, Statistics Netherlands Says

The Hague, Netherlands — In the second quarter of 2026, 152,000 employees in the Netherlands were older than the state pension (AOW) age, accounting for 1.7 percent of all employees, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on October 21. In the first quarter of 2018 the share was 1.2 percent, or 96,000 employees.
By sector, the share of post-pension-age employees was highest in real estate activities at 4.3 percent and in transport and storage at 3.6 percent, and lowest in public administration (0.6 percent) and information and communication (0.7 percent). By sex, 2.3 percent of male employees and 1.1 percent of female employees were older than the state pension age, a persistent gap.
The Netherlands has raised its state pension age in steps since 2013; it is now 67 and will be linked to life expectancy thereafter. Many employees who work beyond that age hold part-time roles, against a backdrop of population ageing and a tight labour market.
