DOJ Finds Ohio State Medical School Admissions Discriminated Against White and Asian Applicants

The U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division announced on October 21 that an investigation found Ohio State University's College of Medicine discriminated against white and Asian applicants in admissions for the classes of 2023, 2024 and 2025, in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Supreme Court's 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions.
The department said the school's "holistic" review process was discriminatory at both the screening and interview stages: screening used scores for Attributes (12 points), Experiences (16) and Metrics (8), and the interview stage also factored in impermissible considerations. Investigators found that equally qualified Black applicants were about 2.8 times as likely to be admitted as Asian applicants.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon said every stage of an admissions process must treat applicants equally, and that the department will continue enforcing federal civil rights law in higher education admissions. Ohio State University is based in Columbus, Ohio.
