Bismarck, North Dakota — The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) is visiting five tribal nations this week to issue free Non-Driver Photo Identification Cards that residents without a driver license can use for voting. The tour reaches the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation on Wednesday, October 21, at the North Segment Community Center, 430 12th St. N., New Town, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The tour began October 19 with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe at Fort Yates, followed by the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa (October 20, Belcourt), the MHA Nation (October 21), the Spirit Lake Nation (October 22, Fort Totten) and the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate (October 23, Hankinson). The cards are free for residents 18 and older; NDDOT staff take photos and review documents on site, paperwork is processed overnight, and the card is mailed to the resident within five days.

Applicants must bring a certified birth certificate and a Social Security card, plus court-issued name-change documents where applicable, such as a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree or adoption order. The outreach aims to make sure residents of remote tribal communities hold the identification North Dakota law requires for voting ahead of the general election.
